Refers to a cultural trait or a pattern shared by the members of a socially recognised group of individuals like an ethnic group, men, women, a particular caste, etc. which are not shared by the total population. For instance, there are special norms for lower castes in the Indian society which are not applicable to upper castes. The concept is associated with Ralph Linton.
