Meaning of CRIMINOLOGY

Meaning of CRIMINOLOGY:

The study of criminal behaviour. The word seems to have been used for the first time in the writings of the French anthropologist P. Topinard towards the end of the nineteenth century. However, several major studies in penology and the treatment of offenders had been published considerably earlier, notably by Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794) and Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832).
