Meaning of ANULOMA AND PRATILOMA

Meaning of ANULOMA AND PRATILOMA:

These are forms of marriages related to the Hindu caste system. Anuloma is a type of hypergamous marriage where a woman of a lower caste or sub-caste marries a man of the higher caste or sub-caste. While this type of alliance has always been permitted, there was a limit on how low in the caste hierarchy one could go. Pratiloma, on the other hand is a hypogamous marriage where a woman of an upper caste or sub-caste marries a man of the lower caste or sub-caste. This is a prohibited form of marriage for which social sanctions differ from one local tradition to another.
