Meaning of ALLIANCE

Meaning of ALLIANCE:

Related to kinship, alliance theory focusses on the structural importance of alliance rather than descent. The concept is closely associated with Claude Levi-Strauss and French anthropology. According to Levi-Strauss, the primitive societies were held together through relationships of marriage called alliance. He said that societies thus organised have elementary structures. Societies with elementary structures include southern India, Australian aboriginals, South-east Asia, and aborigirues of South America. In these societies, the rules of marriage specify whom one should marry, like a cross cousin. Marriage here implies exchange between different kinship groups that may signify hierarchical or egalitarian relationships.
