Meaning of ADELPHIC OR FRATERNAL POLYANDRY

Meaning of ADELPHIC OR FRATERNAL POLYANDRY:

It is a type of polyandry where husbands are brothers. This type of polyandry is more common than the non-fraternal type where husbands are not brothers. It may be regarded as an extreme form of a tendency, present in many societies, for some kind of extension of the marriage alliance to the husband’s brothers or male kin; either in the form of sexual license or of rights to claim the widow in marriage as in Levirate.
