Meaning of ABERRANT DEVIANCE

Meaning of ABERRANT DEVIANCE:

Robert King Merton gave this concept in his essay titled “Social Structure and Anomie.” He used the term ‘aberrant deviance’ to refer to an act where a person deviates from a norm or a law for the sake of personal benefit. He talked of two types of aberrant deviance- Innovation and Retreatism. Innovation refers to a situation where a person uses deviant means to achieve cultural goals like engaging in smuggling to become wealthy. Retreatism on the other hand means rejecting both the society’s goals and means and withdrawing from social life like in the case of a drug addict.
